A qualified mentor brings demonstrable practical experience – ideally in the industry or role you want to develop into. Important indicators are: clear career stages, verifiable results and a structured approach in conversation. Transparency about expectations, process and boundaries of collaboration is also a good sign.

Confidentiality is a central foundation of any mentoring relationship. Content from conversations should not be shared without consent. Many mentors work with clear confidentiality agreements. You can clarify in advance how sensitive information is handled and what expectations apply.

Not every mentoring relationship fits automatically. If conversations don't feel helpful, you should speak openly about it. Sometimes adjusting goals or structure is enough. If it still doesn't fit, you can change mentors or try a different format. Many professionals consciously switch mentors depending on their development phase.

Pay attention to transparency about experience, prices and process. Unrealistic promises, pressure to buy long-term packages or lack of references are red flags. Reputable mentors clearly explain what they can deliver – and what they can't. A good approach is to start with a single session and evaluate the collaboration.

After a single session, you usually get new perspectives, clear next steps or feedback on a specific situation. Bigger changes – like career changes or leadership development – take time. After three months of regular mentoring, first progress is often visible: clearer goals, better decisions and more structure.
